Yes, it is illegal to drive a vehicle without VRT. Anyone whose vehicle’s licence expired after March and April 2020 and the vehicle in question needed the VRT, can now have this done.
In order for the process to run smoothly and without crowding, Transport Malta is allowing a period of 3 months (90 days) for the test to be carried out and the road license to be paid after that with an Insurance agent. The 3 month period commences on Monday 4th May and ends on 31st July 2020. This means that no vehicle with an expired licence will be allowed on the road after 1st August 2020. Find all the details on the Transport Malta web portal here.
